St. Thomas 2024 Recap
St. Thomas continued their record-breaking ascension to Division 1 success this past season finishing top-5 in the conference with a 7-9 conference record and a 15-16 record overall. Each year, the Tommies have continued to improve their place within the Summit League, moving from 9th, to 8th, to 5th this past season. Not only has the St. Thomas WBB program improved their conference totals, but their overall record as well. After winning 7 games in year 1 and 13 games in year 2, the team nearly reached the .500 mark at 15 wins in just their third season at the Division 1 level.
The Tommies were led in scoring by rising star Amber Scalia, who in just her Sophomore season averaged 16.8 PPG on 41.6% shooting overall. She finished top-5 in the conference in scoring and had 10 games in which she scored 20 or more points. Scalia not only earned All-Conference honors in the Summit League but was also recently named the university’s Female Athlete of The Year in 2023-24.
St. Thomas returns Scalia next season as well as the teams top four leading scorers including Jade Hill at 13.2 PPG, Jo Langbehn at 12.4 PPG, and Sammy Opichka at 7.0 PPG. Hill, the Tommies dynamic point guard, also led the team in assists and steals as well as was named Second Team All-Conference in the Summit. Langbehn, the efficient post presence, led all of Division 1 in Field Goal Percentage at 66.5%. Opichka, unfortunately plagued injuries last season, seeks to play an even bigger role in her final season with the Tommies. With upperclassmen leadership and talent all coming back for the 2024-25 season, the Tommies seek to further build upon their existing success and make a run at the schools first conference title.
